In this article, I will go over how the top speeds averaged for motorcycles of all CCs.

So, how fast can an average motorcycle's top speed go?

A typical motorcycle can achieve a top speed of 70 mph or 150mph.

The speed at which the motorcycles will differ based on the CCs, horsepowers, and torque, among other things.

Generally speaking, displacement of a motorcycle is the measurement of the size of the engine and is expressed as the cc (cubic centimeters cm3).

What is Motorcycle displacement?

Motorcycle displacement is the measurement of the volume that pistons move per cycle.

It's a method of determining the volume of an engine, for example, one cc is equal to 1mL. A 600cc motorcycle contains 600ml of volume.

The pistons of a motorcycle move upwards and downwards to create power by burning gas and air inside the cylinder.

The bigger the piston, the more air and gasoline it can burn simultaneously within the cylinder, which generates more power. This is the reason the larger engines, the more power.

However, this is only the case to a certain extent. For instance, the 650cc motorbike Kawasaki Ninja is 650cc and generates much more horsepower than a motorcycle with a capacity of 2000cc Yamaha VX 1900.

To determine the power or speed of the motorcycle, you cannot rely solely on the displacement.

There are many other factors to be considered, such as torque, horsepower power to weight ratio, etc.

50cc Motorbike Top Speed

50cc motorcycles can easily go speeds of 30-50 mph. The maximum speed of 50cc is limited in mopeds and scooters. Therefore, it's possible to achieve a top speed of 60 mph using the restricted engine, but it is unrestricted. A 50cc engine can achieve speeds of up to 55mph.

But, due to a "gentleman's agreement" among manufacturers, today's modern 1000cc superbikes are electronically limited to a top speed of 186 mph (300 km/h).

In general, four-stroke engines contain more components than two-stroke engines so it's expensive as well as maintenance expenses are higher.

Four-stroke engines don't need pre-mixing of fuel and oil as do two-stroke engines. Additionally Four-stroke engines are eco-green because they don't release burned oil into the air or release burnt fuel as Two-stroke engines do.

So, the conclusion is that you should opt for the Two-stroke engine when you are seeking speed. If you're seeking durability, reliability, and efficiency, choose four-stroke engines.

Numbers of cylinders


Cylinders constitute the engine's power source. the engine. They are the area where fuel is ignited and then turns into power.

It is the number of engines that directly influences how fast and the RPM speed of the bike. A motor that has more cylinders will provide more power and performance than those with fewer cylinders.

However, the more cylinders are used, the greater fuel consumption is likely to rise. In the same way the engine that has fewer cylinders is likely to be efficient on fuel.

If your main goal is to speed up, opt for larger cylinder motorcycles such as four-cylinder engines. It is also possible to choose fewer cylinder motors when you're seeking a fuel-efficient bike.

Weight of the motorbike (Rider, Pillion, Luggage)

The final thing you need to be aware of is the light that is present on your motorcycle. It is also a reason (not an enormous one) that can hinder your highest speed.

If you're worried about speed, ensure that you have much as you can in your luggage in case you're planning to go on an extended ride. In addition, be sure you ride in a group when you're worried about speed.

I think that achieving the highest speed of any motorbike is mostly required by racers. However, for the regular motorcyclist whose goal is to enjoy the ride and enjoying the experience. In that case, the variance in speed doesn't matter as much.


Motorcycle Speed and Safety

Safety is always the first important thing when riding motorcycle.

When you are riding, remember to find a balance between speed and safety.

Will reducing speed definitely prevent motorcycle accidents? Not necessarily.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration(NHTSA) conducted a study in the 1980s. According to their data, the average pre-accident speed for more than 900 motorcycle accidents was only 29.8 mph.

That means most motorcycle accidents occurred when the rider was traveling only 30 mph.

In addition, the study showed that the average impact speed for motorcycle accidents was 21.5 mph.

What about motorcycle accidents caused by high speeds?

Only one in every 1,000 motorcycle accidents occurred at a speed of about 85 mph.

This result should be shocking and unexpected.

While, the pre-accident speed of motorcycle accidents is low. But, speeding is always the first reason of motorcycle accidents.

Here is part of the report data released by NHTSA:

"...Thirty-two percent of all motorcycle riders involved in fatal crashes in 2017 were speeding, compared to 18 percent for passenger car drivers, 14 percent for light-truck drivers, and 7 percent for large-truck drivers..."

You can see, a large portion of motorcycle accidents occur at high speeds. When they are happening, they always result in hurt and death.

In fact, the real data may be more serious than this. Because, NHTSA stipulates that an accident is considered speeding only if the record shows one of the following two situations:

  • The police officer concluded that driving too fast for road conditions, racing or traveling in excess of the posted speed limit was a contributing cause of the accident.
  • The motorcycle rider was subsequently charged with a speeding-related offense.

In other words, the data investigated by NHTSA only considers information from police reports and court records.

If the police report and court records do not indicate any of the above, speed is unlikely to be a factor.

Remember the following tips when you are riding in speed:

  • Pay attention to and identify motorcyclists and other vehicles in traffic.
  • Do not infringe on the right of way of motorcyclists.
  • Do not ride distracted.
  • Slow down when turning and pay attention to road conditions.
  • Control your speed when driving on roads with low visibility.
  • Drive carefully and reduce speed when encountering dangerous road conditions.
  • Slow down when lane splitting.

The typical speed of a motorcycle can vary from 70 mph up to the 158-mph mark. The most well-known motorcycles range from 125cc-1000cc.

  • Motorcycle 100cc: 50mph - 70mph
  • Motorcycle 125cc: 60mph - 80mph
  • 150cc motorcycle speed: 60mph - 80mph
  • 250cc bike top speed: 70mph and 100mph
  • 300cc motorbike top speed: 85mph - 120mph
  • 400cc motorbike top speed: 90mph - 130mph
  • 500cc motorbike top speed: 100mph - 120mph
  • 600cc Motorcycle speed: 135mph - 165mph
  • 700cc Motorcycle speed: 120mph - 175mph
  • 800cc Motorcycle speed: 135mph - 175mph
  • 900cc Motorcycle speed: 90mph - 170mph
  • 1000cc Motorcycle speed: 90mph - 186mph
